New Faculty Member - Dr. Joel Napenas

Schulich Dentistry welcomes Dr. Joel Napenas as an Assistant Professor, Oral Medicine.

Dr. Napenas obtained his DDS from Schulich Dentistry in 2002 and comes to us from the department of oral medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina

Dr. Napenas has published many peer reviewed articles and has made numerous presentations on oral cancer and was the recipient of the Lester Burket Memorial Award in 2008 and 2006.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Napenas to Schulich Dentistry.

Dr. Barry Schwartz Keynote Speaker at College of Dentistry, April

Dr. Barry Schwartz has been invited to be the keynote speaker and will present to the College of Dentistry on Ethics and Interpersonal Communications at the University of Saskatchewan on their annual College Activity Day.  He will assist faculty in integrating a standardized patient component of applied inter-personal communications skills and applied ethics into their curriculum.

2013 FEBRUARY

Jason Zimmerman wins Travel Award

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has awarded Jason Zimmerman (Dents 2014) an ICS Travel Award based on his research in the Siqueira Lab. This award invites Jason to present his research at the IADR/AADR/CADR Meeting March 19-23, 2013 in Seattle, Washington.

The Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR) Executive announced that Dr. Walter Siqueira (Dentistry) was acclaimed as Councillor-at-Large for a second term, 2013 - 2015. 

Dr. Harinder Sandhu To Receive Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award
 

Dr. Harinder Sandhu, Vice-Dean, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Director of Schulich Dentistry, will be honoured as a recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award on March 1, 2013.

Congratulations to Dr. Sandhu on this very prestigious honour.

Summer Student Research Program

Congratulations to the following students on winning a summer studentship with Dentistry’s Summer Student Research Program.

MAY 9th - 6th Annual Suzanne Bernier Lecture

Please mark your calendars for Thursday, May 9th. This year's lecture will be presented by Dr. Lisa A. Fortier, DVM, PhD.

Dr. Fortier is an Associate Professor of Large Animal Surgery, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University. Her laboratory studies the intracellular pathways involved in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis, and the clinical application of stem cells for cartilage repair.  Fortier is the vice president of the International Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Society and the immediate past president of the International Cartilage Repair Society.

The lecture series and award honours Dr. Suzanne Bernier, a wonderful colleague, collaborator and mentor, who passed away in 2007.  Dr. Bernier's research focused on the effects of extracellular matrix and inflammation on cartilage and as such, this lecture series highlights outstanding contributions to the field of musculoskeletal research.

Schulich Dentistry IRG (Internal Research Grant Program) Competition Results
Congratulation to Dr. Les Kalman (Restorative Dentistry) who was awarded $9,260 to work on his project ‘Development & Validation of the Virtual Facebow’.

IADH President Elect
During the Congress of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (IADH) in Melbourne, Australia, council members named Dr. Timucin Ari, President Elect of IADH.
