Oral Surgery is primarily concerned with managing traumatic injuries to the jaws, infections, congenital malfunctions and neoplastic growth.  Our research reflects this in that it focuses on repair, rehabilitation of such injuries as well as the basic biology of neoplasia.

DIVISION OF ORAL BIOLOGY

The Division of Oral Biology was established in 1988.  The purpose of the Division is to teach and conduct research in the basic sciences relevant to dentistry.

Members of the Division of Oral Biology also participate in multidisciplinary research groups involving other units of the University. 

All members of Oral Biology (Full and Part-time) are members of the Skeletal Biology Program, a multidisciplinary group conducting fundamental and clinical research on mineralized tissues. 

Graduate students in the Division of Oral Biology are registered in the basic science department(s) to which their supervisor is cross-appointed.

DIVISION OF ORAL MEDICINE AND RADIOLOGY

The Division is responsible for instruction in Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine and Oral Radiology.  It is closely associated with other areas such as Oral Pathology, General Medicine for dental students, Applied Psychology for Dentistry, and Forensic Dentistry. The diverse nature of the Division is reflected in the background of its faculty and the research each pursues.

The Division of Oral Medicine and Radiology with its broad based expertise and interdisciplinary contacts will continue to explore questions of disease, diagnosis and patient management.  Funding to support research may come from the usual sources as well as industry for clinical trials and equipment testing.  Our access to comprehensive care and emergency patients provide populations which are a necessity for clinical research.

DIVISION OF ORTHODONTICS AND PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry is a combined program based on patient centered care.  The students are taught to provide each child patient complete treatment in both domains, Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at least at the level of general practitioners.

Members of Ortho-Paedo conduct research and supervise undergraduate and graduate students locally and internationally.  All paediatric dentists from London and some orthodontists from London and the surrounding cities, including Toronto , participate as part-time instructors.

DIVISION OF GRADUATE ORTHODONTICS

The purpose of the program in Orthodontics is to provide the academic background and clinical experience appropriate to the specialty of Orthodontics. The program is fully accredited by the Council on Education of the Canadian Dental Association, meets the specialty certification requirements of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario and the eligibility requirements of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

DIVISION OF PERIODONTICS

The mission of the division of Periodontics is to train pre-doctoral students in the science of periodontology that meets and exceeds the standards set forth by the Canadian Dental Association and American Dental Association.  Lectures and seminars relating to periodontal disease and its treatment are an important part of the program. Emphasis is placed upon a biologic orientation and application of these principles to the clinical management of periodontal diseases.

DIVISION OF PRACTICE ADMINISTRATION

The division of Practice Administration is responsible for teaching in the subject areas of the history of dentistry, dental ethics and jurisprudence, the epidemiology and prevention of dental diseases, critical appraisal of the dental literature, clinical decision-making using an evidence-based approach and dental practice managment.

The Practice Administration courses are given in the I, III and IV years of the undergraduate dental program.  The Division also presents a course in study design and analysis to the I and II year graduate orthodontic students every other year and a summer course on critical appraisal of the dental literature to the incoming Qualifying Program class each year.

DIVISION OF RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

The Division of Restorative Dentistry is responsible for the training of pre-doctoral dental students to become competent in the management of broken down or missing teeth using various techniques which include direct and indirect restorative materials, dental imlants, fixed and removable prosthesis.  The Division is committed to developing dentists who are compassionate towards their patients and provide the best treatment options for their particular needs. 

The Division of Restorative Dentistry encompasses the disciplines of Dental Morphology, Occlusion, Endodontics, Operative Dentistry and Prosthetic Dentistry.
