Background

Dental Outreach Community Service (DOCS) students working with dental patients

The Dental Outreach and Community Service (DOCS) encompasses 4 specific aims:

  1. To provide students a unique outreach opportunity that compliments their dental education
  2. Provide important free access to oral health care for low-income individuals with no other means of dental coverage
  3. Strengthens the relationships between individuals and the agencies and within the community
  4. Provides the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Western University crucial involvement within the community

It all began when Dr. Ken Wright read an article in his McGill University alumni newsletter.  He then approached Dr. Harinder Sandhu, Schulich Dentistry Director, with the idea of starting an outreach dental program run by volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, and dental students to reach vulnerable populations within London, Ontario.  Over the years, the program has evolved and is now under the direction of Dr. Les Kalman, and is a mandatory component in the 4th year dental curriculum.
