Connection to the community

They say that time flies when you’re having fun, and with summer just around the corner, boy is that ever applicable to another tremendous year at Schulich Medicine – Windsor Campus. In the past newsletter’s, I’ve made a point to mention just how busy and involved our Windsor medical students are, but I think that this final stretch of the year has been the busiest yet.

One of our first major events since the February newsletter was the Windsor Career Night. We were fortunate enough to have more than 14 local physicians volunteer their time and discuss their specialties and career advice with our students. On behalf of all students in attendance, I’d like to thank those involved in making the event a great success.

In April, a number of student-led activities were conducted in efforts to raise money for a variety of local charities. The month started off with a bang when all four Schulich Medicine classes came together to put on a theatrical performance to be remembered. Tachycardia is an annual theatrical production written and performed by our students in efforts to raise money for a variety of charities including the Regional HIV/AIDS Connection.

Locally, two events – Play for a Cure and Head for a Cure – had students participating in a multitude of activities in the effort to raise funds for a local charity called Transition To Betterness.

The Awards of Excellence – Windsor Campus event was also held in April. During the evening, we had the opportunity to celebrate award-winning faculty, staff and students, in addition to the Schulich Medicine Class of 2016.

Later in the month, the second integration weekend of the year was held in Windsor. On this occasion, students had the opportunity to visit Detroit for a multitude of attractions and to partake in this year’s nautical-themed Spring Formal.

Additionally, the Class of 2018 was fortunate enough to receive the first Prescription for Fun Award, supported by Dr. David Wonham. With this award, Katy Bartlett had the brilliant idea of hosting a Windsor Pre-Clerkship Closing Ceremony sports and carnival event at her family farm in Chatham. Thank you to Dr. Wonham and the Bartlett family for making such an incredible event possible.

Finally, we are preparing to say our final farwell to the Class of 2016 as they celebrate their convocation on May 13. To the class – your fun-loving attitude and mentorship will be greatly missed; and we wish all of you the very best in your future endeavours.

In the coming months, the Classes of 2018 and 2019 will have some time off for the summer and the 2017s will be finishing up their last rotation of clerkship. I wish you all of the best in your summer plans, whatever you may be doing and I look forward to seeing you all again in the fall.
