A message from Gerry Cooper, Associate Dean

I am reminded daily about how privileged I am to be a part of the Schulich Medicine – Windsor Program team. Residents of the City of Windsor and the University of Windsor community are certainly supportive of our being here; I am surrounded by very accomplished colleagues; our faculty are not just skilled clinicians and educators, they are also committed to our social accountability mandate; and Schulich Medicine learners are very special people who are definitely the cream of the crop. Every so often though, there are poignant moments, such as the Clark Awards, the Spring Talent Show, and the Awards of Excellence, that drive these reflections home.

Dr. Arthur Kidd, Assistant Director, Learner Equity and Wellness, was recently honoured by the University of Windsor as one of four recipients of the 2014 Clark Awards. These annual awards recognize “outstanding personal service of both alumni volunteers and friends of the University who have made significant commitments in time, energy and expertise by serving on boards and committees, or who have worked extensively to increase the profile and reputation of the University."

Dr. Kidd's contributions are wide-ranging and go well beyond his efforts in helping to develop and grow the Schulich Medicine – Windsor Program. As I listened to Dr. Alan Wildeman’s tribute to Dr. Kidd at the formal presentation, I could not help but feel a great deal of pride because of my connection to the Windsor Program and to colleagues like Dr. Kidd.

I was asked to be one of three judges for the Spring Talent Show. The performances were wide-ranging and included a comedic rapper, a moving concert piano concerto and a warm rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Every performer was exceptional and nicely illustrated the vast talents our students often bring with them to medicine. Once again, I was struck by a sense of pride.

Windsor Program manager, Nicole Sbrocca, recently received a Dean's Award of Excellence for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the Program. It is an exceptional achievement for Nicole after less than a year of service. Congratulations, Nicole, on a well-deserved award!

My sincere thanks to Erica Hoe for her work as Vice President – Windsor for the Hippocratic Council this past year. She has has fostered a great sense of community and will now move into the Past VP role as she enters her clerkship year. Well done Erica and many thanks! I also want to welcome her successor Mr. Yousif Atwan and wish him good luck with this exciting role.

Best wishes to all of you for a safe and enjoyable summer! We will see you back in September starting with our annual Meet & Greet event for our newest students on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.

Sincerely,
Dr. Gerry Cooper
