Celebrating our achievements

A record number of abstracts from Schulich Medicine students have been accepted for the annual History of Medicine Days conference at the University of Calgary. Congratulations to 10 of our medical students: Jessica Bryce, Cindy Zhu, Stephanie Mokrycke, Hannah MacKenzie, Daniel Liu, Vanessa DeMelo, Daniel Stojanovic, Maddy Arkle, Rob Bobotsis, and Babak Aberumand.

Congratulations to Dr. Lisa Fischer and Dr. Gillian Kernaghan, who were announced as two of eight recipients of the 2015 Women of Excellence Awards. Dr. Fischer, an associate professor with the Department of Family Medicine was recognized in the Sports, Fitness and Recreation category, and Dr. Kernaghan, associate professor with the Department of Family Medicine and President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Care London, was recognized in the Health, Science and Technology category. The Women of Excellence Awards celebrate exemplary female leaders from all backgrounds, ages and experiences in London, Ontario and the surrounding region.

Two Schulich Dentistry students have received international research awards from the Salivary Research Group and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in recognition of their innovative work. Congratulations to Yuliya Mulyar and Eduardo Moffa.

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry's Dental Outreach Community Service (DOCS) program is featured in the Community Transformation Report from the Council of Ontario Universities (COU). The 2015 COU report is called “Change Agent – Ontario Universities: Transforming Communities, Transforming Lives”, and provides an overview of the diverse range of social, cultural and economic benefits that Ontario’s universities continue to bring to the province. Under the "Innovation improving the health of Ontarians" category, DOCS is recognized for its delivery of free oral health care services and contribution to dental education at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. Congratulations to Medical Biophysics professor Dr. Michael Kovacs, one of 34 recipients of Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) awards that recognize the work of outstanding Canadian scientists and engineers. Dr. Kovacs was presented the Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering. Read the full story via Western News.

Congratulations to Aaron Ward, PhD, on receiving Prostate Cancer Canada’s Rising Star in Prostate Cancer Research Award. Ward, assistant professor in the Departments of Medical Biophysics and Oncology at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, will receive a total of $446,856 between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2017 for his research titled “Multi-Modality Radiomics for Personalized Prostate Cancer Care.”
