Resident Spotlight: Dr. Adam Maruscak, the 2014 John D. Brown Memorial Resident Award Recipient

Dr. Adam Maruscak has a talent that many doctors-in-training strive for. While he is a gifted surgeon, it is his dedication to holistic care and his compassion toward his patients and their families that makes him an exceptional doctor.

These characteristics earned Dr. Maruscak the 2014 the John D. Brown Memorial Resident Award presented at this year’s Celebration of Excellence on May 21. This award recognizes a postgraduate trainee who displays excellence in patient-centred care and reflects the values and practices of the late Dr. John Brown, who always put his patients first.

As a fourth year resident in General Surgery, Dr. Maruscak has proven himself to be a gifted surgeon, a compassionate doctor, and an inspiration to those around him. His colleagues attest to the fact that on countless occasions he has gone above and beyond what is expected of him to put his patient’s needs at the forefront.

“It is not uncommon for Adam to stay well beyond his scheduled duties in order to participate in surgical intervention on patients he has been involved with or admitted,” said Dr. Michael Ott, program director of the Division of General Surgery. “Adam is also able to establish a trusting relationship with patients, and his presence is often calming to patients who are undergoing extreme stress.”
