Brand Identity Guidelines

Introduction

In 2011, the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry launched its 10 year strategic plan entitled Optimizing Life-long Health.  One of the strategic directions identifies a need for enhancing the School’s communication efforts and brand profile.  Doing so will create a greater public impact for the school at home and around the world.  In early 2012, Western University launched a new visual identity for the University as a whole with the aim of strengthening the University’s ability to gain greater recognition for its world-class research and teaching capabilities.

As part of this strategic direction, the School has now aligned itself more closely with Western University’s re-brand efforts.  The guidelines outlined below will help to build a recognizable brand for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, while also unifying us with all other faculties across the Western campus.  Use and adherence to the Brand Identity Guidelines is crucial to building a recognizable brand for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.  Please follow these guidelines in the production of all materials. Should you have any questions or need assistance with these graphic guidelines or individual projects, please contact Jennifer Parraga, Associate Director, Communications and Marketing or Jasmin Neil, Communications Coordinator at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry at 519.661.2111, ext. 86030, or via email.

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Name

Named the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in 2005 in recognition of a $26-million donation from Seymour Schulich, the official corporate name of our organization is “Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.” Seymour Schulich has benefitted a number of academic institutions across Canada with generous gifts, resulting in a number of schools bearing the name Schulich.  To differentiate ourselves with the other Schulich-named schools, specific guidelines have been created to ensure our brand is clearly defined.

Writing

When using the School’s name in writing, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry must be used upon first reference to the School.

Upon a second reference the only acceptable short form is, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.

When referring to either the Medicine or Dentistry aspects of the School either Schulich Medicine or Schulich Dentistry is acceptable.   However, identifying a separate ‘Schulich School of Medicine’ or ‘Schulich School of Dentistry’ is not allowed.

Please note: The “Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry” is no longer used in either formal or informal communications.

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry can never be referred to as simply ‘Schulich’ or as SSMD.  The full name, or approved short-form (listed above) must be used.

Department and Division Names
The ‘wordmark’ for each department and division will be standardized going forward, and will simply be the name of the department written in Benton or Arial Font, no bigger than 18pt size.  Each template included on our Template Page will have a spot marked for where a department name can be included, and will outline the appropriate size of font to be used.

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program Name

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program offers learners the opportunity to earn a degree from Western University and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry while studying in Windsor, Ontario at the University of Windsor.

Upon first reference, the full name of the School, and the program, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program, must be used.  Upon second reference, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program, or simply, Windsor Program can be used.  Please note, the symbol between the name ‘Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’ and Windsor Program must be a hyphen, not any other symbol.

Western University Name

In 2012, when Western University re-branded, the school’s name changed from The University of Western Ontario to Western University.  The name ‘The University of Western Ontario’ should no longer be used, unless the document or item is a legal document, or a document that can or will become copyrighted.

Upon first reference, the University should be referred to as Western University.  In subsequent references, simply ‘Western’ is acceptable.

When referring to Western University and Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the following is acceptable: Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University.

Robarts Research Institute

In writing, upon first reference the full name ‘Robarts Research Institute’ must be used.  In subsequent references, the use of ‘Robarts’ is an acceptable short form.  It must never be referred to as ‘the Robarts’.

Logo Usage: Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Western University

All departments, units and programs within the School must use both the Western Shield logo and the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry ‘S’ logo. The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is a “co-brand” with Western, meaning the Western Crest logo must always appear in conjunction with the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry ‘S’ logo. At all times priority and prominence should be given to the School’s "S" logo. To download logo files, visit http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/communications/branding.

The Windsor Program has a Schulich Medicine & Dentistry ‘S’ logo specific to the program.  Going forward, this logo must be used in conjunction with the Western Shield and the University of Windsor logo.  Prominence must be given to the Windsor Program logo.  The Western Shield and University of Windsor logo must be of equal size to one another, and given equal prominence to each other.

The logo for the Robarts Research Institute will remain the same.  It must be used in conjunction with the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry ‘S’ logo and the Western Shield.  The logo for Robarts and the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry ‘S’ logo must share equal prominence.

The Western Shield, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and Windsor Program ‘S’ logos and the Robarts Research Institute logo should not be stretched, squished, manipulated or redrawn in any way and it should only be reproduced in approved sizes and colours.

Jpg versions of the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and Windsor Program ‘S’,  Western Shield and Robarts Research Institute logos can be downloaded at: http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/communications/branding.  A link to the University of Windsor logo page is also included.

The .jpg version of the logo is best suited for use in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, Publisher and Excel.  If you need a higher quality version of the logo for any print or design work, please contact Jasmin Neil in the Communications Department at 519.661.2111, ext. 86030 or via email.

Please note: Developing independent logos for individual units, departments, divisions or programs is not permitted.

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry Logo "True Form"

The Schulich Medicine & Dentistry logo is most effective when used on a white background. The reverse version of the logo can be used and is most effective on a purple background. The vertical version of the logo is preferred but the horizontal version of the logo can also be used.

It is also important to note that neither logo should be reproduced in any colour other than the specified Western purple or white. There is a black version of the logo which can be used on rare occasions.

Color Guide

The official colour for the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry logo is Pantone 268 purple, the same colour as the Western logo. It is crucial that only this official Western purple is used to reproduce the logo.

The new visual identity incorporates two new fonts for Western. Our serif font (see the Word Western in the logo) is a custom-made font that we are calling Hellmuth - this font will only be used in the logo files and never anywhere else. Our secondary font is a sans-serif called Benton - the acceptable substitute "system font" is Arial.

It is often desirable to use these fonts in materials, in order to correspond with the logo. If you would like the Benton Font installed on your computer, please contact Jasmin Neil.

Web

The application of solid, consistent standards for good markup, accessibility, and graphic design for the Web is very important.  Before designing or redesigning your web site, please contact Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s Information Services staff or Kristin Tate, Digital Communications Coordinator, for guidance.

The graphic standards outlined above for print publications must also be adhered to for the Web. Various Schulich Medicine & Dentistry logo options have also been designed specifically for the Web.  Please contact the Communications Web Specialist.
