Endowed Chair Positions

Dr. Earl Russell

Dr. Earl Russell

The Earl Russell Chair in Pain Management

The Earl Russell Chair in Pain management was established in 1999 through a generous gift from Dr. Earl Russell.  Dr. Russell was a faculty member from 1968 to 1981 in the Department of Anaesthesia. The broad mandate of the Earl Russell Chair is to improve clinical care, to educate and to acquire new knowledge in the areas of chronic pain, cancer pain and acute pain. Better integration of the fields of acute and chronic pain will encourage the development of new paradigms for prevention and treatment of persistent pain at all stages in life.

Dr. Dwight Moulin is the current Chair and has held the position since 2005. He has published extensively on the role of opioid analgesics in the management of chronic pain and led the first randomized controlled trial of morphine in the management of chronic non-cancer pain. He described the prevalence and impact of chronic pain in multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barre syndrome – two neurological disorders where significant pain was not previously recognized. More recently he has led a series of observational studies on the long term outcome of the management of neuropathic pain. He chaired the Neuropathic Pain Special Interest Group of the Canadian Pain Society from 2005-2014 and led the Consensus Statement on the Pharmacological Management of Chronic Neuropathic Pain – initially published in 2007 and updated in 2014.

Dr. Henry Barnett

Dr. Henry J. Barnett

The Kathleen and Dr. Henry Barnett Chair in Stroke Research

The Kathleen & Dr. Henry Barnett Chair in Stroke Research was established in 2010 to recognize the outstanding achievements of Kathleen and Dr. Henry Barnett. Dr. Henry Barnett was a pioneer in stroke prevention, both in the development of the use of aspirin and in defining the role of surgery. He led scientific studies which fundamentally changed the direction of cerebrovascular disease treatment. With Dr. Charles Drake, he founded the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at Western University. He was also the founding Scientific Director of Robarts Research Institute. Finally, with his wife Kathleen, he drew international attention to the need to preserve Ontario’s dwindling environmental heritage, and was instrumental in the preservation of the Oak Ridges Moraine.

The Kathleen & Dr. Henry Barnett Chair in Stroke Research is held by an internationally recognized clinician scientist having demonstrated research productivity in the field of cerebrovascular disease. The Chair is currently held by Dr. Luciano Sposato whose research focuses on cerebrovascular disease and atrial fibrillation. Dr. Sposato has presented over 170 scientific research papers in national and international conferences and lectured in more than 150 conferences. He has authored over 30 scientific papers in first-line journals (i.e. The Lancet, Annals of Neurology, Brain, JAMA Neurology, Neurology, Stroke) and chapters in several books of neurology.

He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association, member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Neurology, Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, World Journal of Neurology and Journal of Cerebrovascular Diseases; and peer-reviewer for Neurology, Stroke, Cerebrovascular Diseases, Annals of Neurology, European Neurology, International Journal of Stroke, Neurology: Clinical Practice, BMC Neurology, Neuroepidemiology, Frontiers in Neurology, Journal of the Neurological Sciences, Journal of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Journal of Epidemiology and Global Health, International Journal of Neuroscience, Archives of Medical Research, Production and Operations Management, Revista Argentina de Cardiología, and Neurología Argentina.

Beryl and Richard Ivey

The Richard and Beryl Ivey Chair in Clinical Neurological Sciences

The Richard and Beryl Ivey Chair in Clinical Neurological Sciences was established in 1980. It was the third chair endowed by the Ivey family following The Richard Ivey Chair in Medicine (1966) and The Richard Ivey Chair in Surgery (1974). Dr. M.J. Hollenberg, Dean of Medicine, and Dr. Douglas Bocking, Vice President of Health Sciences, recommended that the first person to hold the new Chair position be Dr. Henry J. Barnett, Co-Founder of the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at Western University.

Dr. Paul Cooper is the current Richard and Beryl Ivey Chair in Clinical Neurological Sciences. Dr. Cooper joined the Department in 1981 following following a research fellowship at Harvard Medical School. His research interests include trials of new medication and treatment in the area of neuroendocrinology and headache.
