Introduction

“Don’t just do something, stand there!” said the White Rabbit to Alice
Lewis Carol, Alice in Wonderland

When it comes to medical education research, the White Rabbit’s advice is sound; many Clinician-Educators have difficulty dedicating time to the extended engagement that rigorous research demands.  Moreover, in most centres, there exist few opportunities for developing the skill set required to participate actively in medical education research.  This is especially true for faculty with advanced training in education (i.e., M.Ed degrees). Having devoted a significant amount of time to developing an initial skill set, these faculty members are willing and able to contribute to the field, but they nevertheless require two invaluable commodities: time and mentorship.

The SSMD Centre for Education Research & Innovation is pleased to announce that it has received funding from the AMOSO Opportunities Fund in support of four, two-year Education Research Fellowship positions for new or existing AFP physicians at the SSMD.  With two fellowships awarded in Spring 2010 we are now seeking applicants  for   f for two fellowships beginning in Winter 2011.

What is the Education Research Fellowship?

Geared towards new or existing AFP physicians who have completed or are near completion of a Masters degree in education (or equivalent), the fellowship will financially support faculty to spend, at minimum, one full day per week at the Centre for Education Research & Innovation over a period of two years.  During the programme, fellows will participate in weekly research meetings, periodic education rounds and an annual local conference.  Close mentorship by and regular individual research meetings with the Senior Mentor (Dr. L. Lingard) and Programme Supervisor (Dr. M. Goldszmidt) will also be a core aspect of the fellowship. Fellows will be expected to complete at least one major research project as the principal investigator and to participate as a collaborator on, at the minimum, a second.
As part of their development of a research project, it is expected that fellows will apply for at least one competitive research grant, prepare an ethics submission, learn to manage a research team (including research staff), and successfully disseminate their work to the scientific community in the form of peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading medical education journals and presentations at (inter)national meetings (see Appendices A and B for details on the support team and proposed timelines).
The fellowship is intended to put faculty on a path towards a new academic job profile of “Clinician- Educator- Researcher”. This job profile will involve ongoing protected time for fellows to engage in substantial, programmatic research following the completion of the fellowship. To ensure that the momentum established in fellows’ research careers is maintained, Department Chairs will be required to commit to ongoing protection of one day/week and a formal academic role for the faculty member as a “Clinician-Educator-Researcher” within their department.
