Centre Research Update: Spring 2011

As the end of our second year of medical education scholarship comes to a close, the Centre for Education Research & Innovation is happy to announce successful publications and grant applications from members of our community:
- Dr Lorelei Lingard and collaborators Drs C Schryer, M Mian, M Spafford and E Afros won the 2010 National Council of Teachers of English award for Best Articles Reporting Textual Research in Scientific Communication for their paper entitled, "Trial of the Expert Wittness: Negotiating Credibility in Child Abuse Correspondence" (Written Communication 26:3)
- Dr Kathy Myers and Ms Elaine Zibrowski have published articles in the journals Teaching & Learning in Medicine as well as Academic Medicine. Elaine, Kathy and Lorelei were also invited to present their work at ICRE 2011, the annual conference of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.
- Dr Chris Watling was awarded runner-up for Best Oral Research Presentation at the 2011 Canadian Confernece on Medical Education for his presentation, 'What actually influences physician learning during training: a reconceptualization of the notion of feedback'.
- Dr Mark Goldszmidt received an AMOSO Innovations grant to support a project entitled, 'Improving Care for Complex Patients: Influencing the Communication practices that shape care'. Mark was accepted into a PhD program in the School of Health Professions Education at the University of Maastricht.
- Dr Sayra Cristancho and Dr Bob Kiaii (along with several external collaborators) received a JP Bickell Foundation Research Grant for her project on ‘Usability Testing of Virtual and Physical Simulation Resources for Training Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery’. Sayra, along with Drs Rajni Patel, Michael Naish, Christopher Schlachta and Adam Dubrowski were also awarded a Schulich Faculty Support for Research in Education Grant this spring ‘Computer-based vs. Expert-based Assessment for Complex Surgical Tasks’. Dr Cristancho and her collaborators in the area of Serious Games for Health Professions Education also published a recent study in the International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship (8:1), titled ‘Bringing Community Health Nursing Education to Life with Serious Games’.
- Michael Ott was awarded a Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Faculty Support for Research in Education Grant for his project entitled ‘Meta-cognition in the operating room’. Mike, along with co-investigators Lorelei Lingard and Mark Goldszmidt, will explore teaching methods in surgical education.
- Dr Marie-Eve LeBel received an AMOSO Opportunity Fund this spring titled ‘Fostering the Future of Simulation-Based Surgical Training: The Simulation-based Educator and Researcher in Surgery (SiBERS)’. This grant will allow Marie-Eve to be a research fellow at the Centre for two days a week over the next three years, under joint supervision of Drs Sayra Cristancho and Lorelei Lingard.
- Mr Allan McDougall was accepted as a doctoral student in the Faculty of Health & Rehabilitation Science at the University of Western Ontario. Allan will continue to develop his work in healthcare communication in the Health Professional Education PhD program.
