Intent to Register (ITR)
WHAT is Intent to Register and why is it important?
ITR is the process for undergraduate students to inform Western about the degree/modules in which they would like to register for the 2013/14 session. When final marks are available in May, students will be adjudicated for their ITR choices (eligibility will be determined) and then assigned to modules/degrees for 2013/14.
WHEN does Intent to Register happen?
The ITR online service is available from February 1 to March 31, 2013. Only students who submit an ITR before the deadline (March 31st) will be given access to web registration for Fall/Winter courses.
The online ITR process is relatively easy. Information can be found in Step 5 in the INTENT TO REGISTER PLANNING GUIDE
What RESOURCES are available to help with ITR?
- ITR EVENTS for students interested in modules leading to BMSc degrees (including Interative ITR Sessions, Departmental Presentations, Information Fair for the Basic Medical Sciences, and the BMSc Program Table)
- DEPARTMENTAL PRESENTATIONS AND YouTube VIDEOS: to find out more about each department's courses and modules, and what students have to say about their modules.
- ADMISSION > to Year (select the appropriate year)
- HOW TO submit an ITR for modules leading to BMSc degrees
- 2012/13 ACADEMIC CALENDAR for the Admission Requirements (first-year courses) for the modules being requested for 2013/14.
- 2013/14 ACADEMIC CALENDAR: for the list of modules offered by each basic medical science department AND the courses required to complete each module. It is confusing to have to look at two Academic Calendars but, unfortunately, that's the way it is for this year!
- ACADEMIC COUNSELLING WEBSITE for Science and BMSc students.
- ACCESS TO COURSES: the constraint information for basic medical science modules (the charts are being updated and you should check back before summer registration).

When doing my online ITR, I chose Faculty of Science but I didn't see Bachelor of Medical Sciences as a degree possibility. What should I do? |
Select Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry as your "faculty" and you should then find Bachelor of Medical Sciences as a degree option. You likely have some extra credits (transfer credits, perhaps) and the online ITR system "thinks" that you're going into Year 3. We'll fix/override your year-level for 2013/14 during the adjudication period in May, if necessary. |

What courses/marks do I need to be eligible for Year 2 of the BMSc Program? |
See ADMISSION > TO YEAR 2 for information about Current Western students (2012/13) |
|
Can I be admitted to the BMSc Program with a mark less than 60% in one of my first-year half courses in biology, chemistry, math or physics, as long as I get a higher mark in the other half course? Example: I've got 58% in Chemistry 1100A and 72% in Chemistry 1200B |
No. Each of the first-year half courses in biology, chemistry, math and physics must be completed with a mark of at least 60%. An average will not be taken on two half courses in biology (or chemistry or math or physics). If you've got a mark less than 60% in any of these eight half courses and want to get into the BMSc Program in Year 2 (or 3), you must repeat/upgrade the first-year course. |
|
I've got a mark less than 60% in one of my half courses in biology (or chemistry or math or physics). Can I repeat the course in the summer and still be admitted to Year 2 BMSc? |
If you upgrade the mark in the summer, you might be admitted to Year 2 BMSc for 2013/14. If Year 2 BMSc fills up with students who satisfy all the ADMISSION CRITERIA, you'll likely be registered in a BSc degree for Year 2, instead. You should take the courses specified in the COURSE SELECTION GUIDELINES for the module you want in Year 3, and submit an ITR for Year 3 BMSc next year. |
|
I've got a mark less than 60% in one of my half courses in biology (or chemistry or math or physics). Can I repeat the course in Year 2? |
If you have a mark less than 60% in one of the Biology half courses, repeat it in the summer, if at all possible!! Biology 2290F/G, 2382B and 2581B all require a mark of 60% in both Biology 1001A and 1002B. If the mark less than 60% is in one of the chemistry, math or physics half courses, you can repeat the first-year course in Year 2 but you will NOT be admitted to Year 2 BMSc. You can submit an ITR for Year 3 BMSc and repeating the course in Year 2 won't affect you negatively. |

How do I choose between the different Honors Specialization modules? |
Look at the ACADEMIC CALENDAR for the courses required in each module. Check the course descriptions for each course to get an idea of what you'll be taking in your senior years. Many of the Honors Specialization modules contain the same courses in Year 2 (see FOUNDATION COURSES for a stacked comparison of the 2000-level courses). As long as you have the appropriamodule(s) within BMSc (maybe Double Majors?) so that you'll have registration access to the 2000-level courses needed to request the Honors Specialization modules, again, during the ITR process te 2000-level courses in Year 2, you can submit an ITR for any of the modules for Year 3. |
|
What happens if I'm not eligible for either my First Choice or Second Choice during ITR? |
You'll be put into the degree/module that we think makes the most sense, based on your ITR choices and marks. If you're eligible for Year 2 BMSc but your average isn't high enough to get into the Honors Specialization modules of your First and Second Choices, we'll put you into a for Year 3. |
For students applying to Year 3 BMSc
Question |
Answer |
|
What is the cutoff average for admission to the various Honors Specialization modules? |
There isn't a pre-determined cutoff average for any of the Honors Specialization modules. The only thing that is pre-determined is the number of spaces in each Honors Specialization module. The average of the person to take the last available space for each HSP module is that year's cutoff average. See ADMISSION > to Year 3 and look for the Maximum Capacity and Cutoff Averages in the Honors Specialization section. |
|
I'm applying to Ivey for 2013/14. Do I still complete an ITR for BMSc? |
You should submit an ITR for Year 3 BMSc in case you don't get admitted to the HBA program. If you are admitted to HBA1 and want to complete the combined BMSc/HBA program, you will ask for this during HBA1. |
|
Do BMSc students in Year 2 get any preference for admission to Year 3 BMSc? |
No. Any student satisfying the Admission Requirements and ADMISSION CRITERIA are treated equally during the adjudication period (assessing students for eligibility for BMSc and the various modules) |
For students going into Year 4 BMSc
Question |
Answer |
|
Can I simply click on |
Yes, provided you want the same module(s) for Year 4. If, for example, you're registered in an Honors Specialization and a Major in Year 3 and submit your ITR by clicking "continue in program", you're asking for the same Honors Specialization and Major combination for Year 4. You can remove the Major later, by submitting some paperwork to either the Academic Counselling Team in WSC 191 or to the BMSUE Office (MSB 137 or 138) |
|
What if I don't want to continue in the same module(s) for Year 4? |
Go through the entire ITR process by selecting Schulich as your faculty, etc. |
|
I haven't completed all of my "foundation courses". Can I still get into an Honors Specialization in Year 4? |
If you haven't completed all the courses listed in the WEIGHTED AVERAGES CHART before Year 4 (including foundation courses), you must check with the departmental representative to see if he/she is willing to recommend that you still can be considered for Year 4 of the Honors Specialization module. |
|
What are the "cutoff averages" for the different Honors Specialization modules in Year 4? |
There isn't a pre-determined cutoff average for any of the Honors Specialization modules. The only thing that is pre-determined is the number of spaces in each Honors Specialization module. The average of the person to take the last available space for each HSP module is that year's cutoff average. See ADMISSION > to Year 4 and look for the Maximum Capacity and Cutoff Averages in the Honors Specialization section. |
|
Do all Honors Specialization modules have research projects in Year 4? |
No. The Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences does not contain a research project. |
|
If I'm in a BSc degree in Year 3, can I submit an ITR for Year 4 BMSc? |
No, not usually. If you were not eligible to register in Year 3 BMSc, you cannot register in the BMSc Program at any time in the future. If you think you would have been eligible for Year 3 BMSc, come and see us at the BMSc Program Table with this query. See the EVENT CALENDAR for times/location. |
GENERAL ADVICE for students interested in modules leading to a BMSc degree (i.e. the BMSc Program)
Students who want to be considered for the BMSc Program should select a BMSc degree and module(s) for both their First and Second Choices.
If students aren't eligible for the BMSc Program, they won't be left hanging! They will be adjudicated (assessed) for a BSc degree. More information about the adjudication process will be posted later in the term under FAQs > ADJUDICATION
Students have to submit an Intent to Register each year.
Many students in the BMSc Program switch modules when they move from Year 2 to Year 3, since the courses in Year 2 are much the same for most of the modules. Going from Year 3 to 4, some students change from a discipline-specific module (e.g. Honors Specialization in Pharmacology) to the interdisciplinary module [e.g. Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences (for students going into Years 3 and 4 in 2013/14) or Honors Specialization in IMS (Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences, for student going into Year 2 in 2013/14)] and vice versa.
Admission into the modules leading to BMSc degrees is a two-step process.
Students are first adjudicated (assessed for eligibility) for the BMSc Program and, if eligible, are then adjudicated for the module(s) requested during ITR. See ADMISSION (and select the appropriate year) for details about admission to the Honors Specialization, Specialization and Double Major modules.
