Admission & Progression

Medical Sciences 1 students will progress to Medical Sciences 2 provided they satisfy certain conditions (completion of specific courses with minimum marks, full load of courses, etc.).

There is no limit to the number of students in Medical Sciences 1 who can progress to Medical Sciences 2. Provided all requirements are met (see the link immediately below), students in Medical Sciences 1 will progress to Medical Sciences 2.

Note: special permission is not granted for students to progress to Medical Sciences 2 if they do not satisfy one or more of the conditions for progression. Students who are interested in applying to Year 3 BMSc but are not eligible to progress to Medical Sciences 2 may apply for admission to Year 3 BMSc as applicants from the "competitive pool". The conditions for admission from the competitive pool include minimum marks of 60% in each of the 1000-level courses listed in the Admission Requirements for the module to which they apply, and these minimum marks must be achieved prior to the September of Year 3. The minimum marks of 60% in each of the 1000-level courses in biology, chemistry, math and physics for admission to any basic medical science module must be achieved and this minimum level of academic performance will not be waived.

An appeal process is not in place for students who are not eligible to progress to Medical Sciences 2 since students interested in applying to Year 3 BMSc can apply for admission from the competitive pool.

Admission to Year of the 3 BMSc Program is assured for students in Medical Sciences 2 who satisfy:

• the Admission Requirements (specific 1000-level and 2000-level courses with minimum marks) for the module they wish to enter in Year 3, and
• the conditions for Assured Admission to Year 3 BMSc for Students in Medical Sciences 2

Admission to Year of the 3 BMSc Program is NOT assured for students being considered for admission from the "competitive pool":
There should be space in Year 3 BMSc for additional students (e.g. students in Year 2 BSc and students in Medical Sciences 2 who do not satisfy the conditions for assured admission). These students are considered as applicants from the "competitive pool" and these students must satisfy certain conditions to be considered for admission. The number of spaces remaining in Year 3 BMSc may be sufficient to admit all students from the competitive pool. NOTE:  Admission to the various Honors Specialization modules in the BMSc Program is not assured for any student as each Honors Specialization module has a maximum capacity in both Years 3 and 4.

All students in Year 3 of the BMSc Program are assured progression to Year 4 of the BMSc Program. No student, however, is assured progression/admission to any particular Honours Specialization module.

Students MUST be in Year 3 of the BMSc Program to progress to Year 4 BMSc.

Any student in Year 3 BMSc can apply for admission to Year 4 of any Honours Specialization module, provided they complete the correct courses by the end of Year 3 (specified in the Weighted Average Chart) and have a competitive Weighted Average.

Registration in a particular Honours Specialization module in Year 3 does not give students an advantage when applying for registration in the same Honours Specialization module in Year 4.

NOTE: a full load of 5.0 courses in Year 3 is not required for progression to Year 4 BMSc (and any Honours Specialization module)
