Announcement: Associate Dean Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Susanne Schmid has been appointed as the Associate Dean, Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2022.

Dr. Schmid earned a degree in Biology from the University of Tuebingen in 1993, and a PhD in Animal Physiology in 1997. She was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 2007, and has been the Director of the Neuroscience Graduate program since 2015.

Dr. Schmid is an internationally-recognized biomedical researcher and academic leader. She is dedicated to advancement of research focused on elucidation of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying sensory filtering and its impact on higher cognitive processes in normal and disease states. Dr. Schmid participates on numerous grant review committees including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Ontario Mental Health Foundation (OMHF), Alzheimer’s Association, and German Research Council. Dr. Schmid also participates in a number of professional societies and editorial boards, and serves as a manuscript reviewer, as well as participating on many faculty and university committees.

Dr. Schmid has been the recipient of a number of research awards, including doctoral and postdoctoral intramural research training awards from the German Academic Exchange Council, the German Research Council, and the Wilhelm Schuler Foundation. She has also received a Rainer and Maria Teufel Award, Young Investigator Award, as well as more recent support from the CIHR, Canada Foundation for Innovation, Ontario Brain Institute, Ontario Mental Health Foundation and NSERC.
