Announcement: Dr. Kevin Fung appointed Chair/Chief, Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Kevin Fung has been appointed as Chair/Chief, Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London effective July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2022.

Dr. Fung completed a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Biophysics at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 1994, his Doctor of Medicine at Queen’s University in1997, and residency in Otolaryngology at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 2002. He completed a fellowship in head and neck surgery and additional training in laryngology at the University of Michigan in 2004.

Dr. Fung returned to London to join the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery in 2004, and is cross-appointed to the Department of Oncology and the Don Wright Faculty of Music. He is a graduate of the Ontario Medical Association/Canadian Medical Association Master’s Certificate Physician Leadership Development Program from the York University Schulich School of Business in 2015.

Dr. Fung’s clinical practice encompasses head and neck oncology, microvascular reconstructive surgery and laryngology. At Victoria Hospital – London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) he serves as Site Chief for the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. He oversees the Vocal Function Lab, a multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to the management of voice problems including specialized office-based laryngeal procedures for treatment of spasmodic dysphonia and vocal cord paralysis. He was the physician-lead for the implementation of the Functional Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing program at LHSC, which has been proven to be a highly impactful quality improvement initiative for the management of patients with swallowing problems. He was the co-surgeon for Canada’s first Transoral Robotic Surgery in 2010.

At Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Dr. Fung serves as Co-Chair of the Respiration and Airways Course Committee, Chair of the Clinical Sciences Electives Committee, Vice Chair of the Clerkship and Electives Committee, in addition to serving as the Honorary Class President of Medicine Class of 2015. He is the Chair of the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery Undergraduate Medical Education Committee, Co-Chair of the South Western Academic Health Network Inter-Professional Education Working Group, Member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Examination Committee, Fellow of the Triological Society, and Member of the Simulation Education Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. He is co-director of a national simulation-based bootcamp at the Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robotics.

Dr. Fung’s academic focus is medical education. He has more than 135 peer-reviewed publications. Due to his contributions to the field, Dr. Fung has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award in 2007; the Schulich Excellence in Education Award for Undergraduate Education in 2008; the Interprofessional Leadership Award - London Interprofessional Healthcare Students’ Association in 2011; the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery Foundation Honour Award in 2013; and the Canadian Association of Medical Education Certificate of Merit, as well as the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery Award for Excellence in Education in 2016.
