Announcement: Dr. Michael Motolko appointed Chair/Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Motolko has been appointed as Chair/Chief, Department of Ophthalmology in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London, effective December 1, 2016 to November 30, 2021.

In 1976, Dr. Motolko graduated Magna cum Laude with a medical degree from the University of Ottawa. Subsequently, his internship was completed at St. Michael’s Hospital (1977), and residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto (1980). He completed two years of glaucoma fellowship training; the first year at the University of British Columbia, and the second year at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Motolko began at Western University in 1999 as an Associate Professor and Program Director in the Department of Ophthalmology, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. In 2007, he was appointed as Professor and is currently also an Ophthalmologist at St. Joseph’s Health Care London.

Furthermore, Dr. Motolko has been actively involved in a number of national and international committees. He served as Chair for the Canadian National Advisory Board (2004), the Canadian Regional Glaucoma Advisory Board Meeting (2005), the Central Regional Advisory Board (2006), the Glaucoma Education Summit Meeting (2007) and the Executive Committee for Clinical Insights into Glaucoma Symposium (2008 - 2010).

Dr. Motolko’s clinical focus is on Adult Glaucoma, cataracts and related diseases. He has been awarded the Ivey Eye Institute Award for Excellence in Lecture/Clinical Teaching, Level: Postgraduate multiple times including in 2010, 2012, and 2013.
