Health research showcase features London’s up and coming scientists

Close to 400 young scientists will be presenting their research at the third annual London Health Research Day at the London Convention Centre today (Tuesday, March 18).   London Health Research Day has grown to be the largest multi-disciplinary research day in Ontario.  The full day event features workshops, poster and platform presentations, and a key note address from a renowned scientist.

For the second year running, the Lucille and Norton Wolf Health Lecture Series will take centre stage during lunch.  This year’s keynote lecturer is Dr. Margaret McCarthy, professor and chair, Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, University of Maryland School of Medicine.  Dr. McCarthy is widely recognized as a leader in the field of neuroscience and her research focuses on the influence of steroid hormones in the developing brain.

But the main highlight of the day is the 32 platform presentations and over 350 poster presentations by the students, trainees and postdoctoral scholars.  One study, for example, has identified a new marker which may have use in expediting diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.  Another looks at the use of a novel treatment to protect kidneys during transplantation and improve outcomes.

The participants are judged on their scientific posters and platform presentations by established scientists working at Western and Lawson, and the highest performers will be recognized at a Wine and Cheese ceremony starting at 5:30 p.m.

London Health Research Day is organized by The Schulich school of Medicine & Dentistry and Lawson Health Research Institute.
